I was very excited that this year I would be running with these kids. I promised them I would and they were all excited to know I'd be out there with them.
As soon as I got to the field I was met with smiles. A few kids even took pictures with me (well their shoes did, anyway). We were all ready. I lined up at the back of the pack, just wanting the kids to all do their best and not be distracted by me. Time began and we all took off.
As I started running, I immediately caught up to the back of the pack. I just set my pace and kept running. Now I wouldn't suggest running right after lunch. A few runners, including myself, complained of stomach aches.
I had fun passing students. I was sure to let them know that they just got beat by their teacher. Some students I passed refused to accept that and took off running past me again. I even had a few where we repeated this "who can pass who?" for a while. I was hoping I was motivating them to do their best just because they wanted to beat me.
My running friend joined me on my second lap. That was nice because she could pace me and keep me going strong.
I finished pretty quick, but it didn't matter. What did matter was that I had a completed something else that I originally thought was beyond my capabilities, all because I was brave enough to try runner. And like a candy cane, that's pretty sweet.
